pave the way to healing and happiness for most of this immigrant family. “A Breath of Hope” is book 2 in this series but it is complete unto itself. Tracing the family members from Sweden to Minnesota, the preparations, voyage across the ocean & land and getting settled in “Amerika”, were all finely detailed by Lauraine Snelling. These folks had a rough life and worked very hard, but the promise of future success in a place where land and resources were so plentiful was all that was needed to provide hope and incentive; family and faith provide the anchor.Every good story has conflict and this story has a two legged, Swedish one. He’s the head of the family and one of the most unpleasant characters I’ve met in a very long time. Unraveling the mystery of his nastiness is 🔑 to the greatness of this volume. You’ll wish him ill, you’ll pray he’s reformed - all within a few pages of each other. It’s been a long time since a character raised this much emotion, good and bad, from me.Snelling is a consummate historical fiction writer. There’s no need to fear language, violence or sexual content. “A Breath of Hope” is a great book and has me hooked enough to investigate book 3 in this series.

The story takes a long time to be told. The action is very slow. It Takes about half the book to get to the immigration of Nilda Carlson and her brother. Then when they arrive in Minnesota, all is not well with the extended family there. It takes the other half to finally figure out what is wrong with Uncle Einar and his bad attitude, leaving every one else to cope with the problem. In my opinionthis is a book better to skip reading unless youlike very detailed information about the ocean crossing and the horrible conditions in steerage voyages.This is not a romance novel like other books of this author. I do not think it is her best work.

Thank you for another good book! I love the way you describe your characters in the story. I love your books because the faith in our Lord is brought out in each character. The words of the Bible strengthens your characters, and myself. I never have to worry about trashy language, in your books....thank you! How you put it all together amazed me. It's hard to imagine what some of these immigrants had to go through to leave their countries to survive and make a life for themselves and their families. I look forward to reading all of your books!!!

I have loved Lauraine Snelling's books over the years. This and the one before it are good but not quite up to what some of the others were. I do enjoy reading "slice of life" fiction as I think of it, with details about day to day life in the past, and this author is one of the very best at that. However, this story moves so slowly....it has taken two books to discover what the problem was with Uncle Einar, and even though that mystery dominated both books the answer was revealed hastily and with little detail at then end of this one, no in depth explanation. On a humorous note, they sure drank a lot of coffee! I was tempted to go back through and count the number of times they talked about making or getting a cup of coffee, but will leave that for another day. It was a bunch, though. Guess they needed all that caffeine to do the hard work on a farm and felling trees.!

Mrs.Snelling! What an awesome story of faith, Hope and love! But it cannot be the end at such an amazing beginning for Gerd, The Carlsons , The Bensons! Tell me there is another, what of railroad owner! Lumber yard worker, teacher; Ivar wanted to do more maybe there , Nilda's hope of marriage! I'll pray and wait! Thank you these two stories were uplifting! I lost several people I love and two books in a week help soothe my spirits!!

I enjoy all Lauraine Snelling's books, they are hard to put down when you start reading and when it's a series, I must order the next book when it's available, until I have the whole series. Those are books I will NEVER sell as I like to refer back to them sometimes.

Love this author! Wonderful stories about the immigrants who built this country.

I gave this book five stars because it has everything; family, friends, faith and love. This family shows love even when treated with cruelty. I could feel their homesickness and loneliness. But the ending surprised me. You will love it. It doesn't disappoint.
