Author is awesome, I have several books of his. I'm not very good yet but will certainly buy more of his books.
My daughter loves all things Japanese right now -- particularly the country's affinity for "kawaii" characters. She's been drawing up a kawaii storm ever since I bought this book, along with Prismacolor 1774800 Premier Colored Pencils, Manga Colors, 23-Count pencils. This is the fourth (!) Christopher Hart book we've purchased and she is just eating them up and learning a lot. I'm so happy to see her so excited about art!
This is a learning your letters and numbers book. Haha you draw a 5 and turn it in to a penguin. Definitely cute, definitely for children. Small maybe 40 pages.
My 12 year old Daughter enjoys drawing, she picks it up here and there when she's in the mood. At this point I wouldn't say she's an avid drawer, it's more of a casual pastime. She's definitely into kawaii though so the combination manga kawaii for the beginner was perfect and she loves drawing characters from the book.
I think the description of this book on Amazon is lacking, as you can't even see inside the book. If I hadn't held it in my hands I would have never known how good a book this is. It's a guide to those ridiculously cute characters that you see everywhere. And it lends its self to computer animation perfectly - unlike most of Chris Hart's books, this one has each drawing colored in for you and he shows how to use the colors to make something painfully cute even cuter. Great book - just wish my 9 year old would let me see it once in a while...
My Great Niece loves this book! She just turned 9. It is progressive in capabilities of drawing the characters both humans and animals. They are so cute! I also purchased a clipboard (I already had paper and pencils/colored pencils at the ready) the clipboard worked great for drawing while she looked at the examples in the book. It was a real special time we shared together, thank you!
Clear instructions for drawing kawaii characters and precise and informative background about kawaii which lead to drawing teenagers kawaii. As a bonus I learn how to put characters in scene! Full color, exquisite printing on glace paper.
Easy to read and see instructions. I have no personal skills at drawing but I loved doing this anyway. The only problem for me is breaking pencil tips! I love how it shows all the different styles and takes you from idle interest to hobbies and then even breaks down the publishing industry. Fascinating! GREAT book! Great FIRST book.
The book is adorable, but offers very little useful tips for people looking to learn to draw. It might be better labeled for artists looking for inspiration in genre they are unfamiliar with.
