Bestselling author and former policewoman Ann Rule, delivers another Masterpiece in her Crime Files collection as she takes the readers behind the scenes of homicides, and into the minds of twisted psychopaths. An expert in law enforcement, and an advocate for victims of violent crimes, Ann Rule describes chilling, detailed investigations of mystery and murder. The author portrays several crime cases as she exposes hidden truth, what really happened, and what could have been prevented. As a crime reporter, she studies possible motives of disturbed killers and their next move, while attempting to place the proper pieces to the mysterious puzzle. In many cases, she knows the truth in advance, but must prove that the suspect is not only guilty, but must bring justice to the families of the victims. Evidence for investigations begin with no clues, while the innocent continue to become victims, and the murderer walks the streets. Doomed relationships, tragic deaths, and controlling husbands is only the beginning of horrifying events. A young boy plunged to his death from a balcony, a young woman found hanging inside of a mansion, a woman missing in the midst of a blizzard and a woman and her children murdered by a man filled with rage are only some of the crime cases that shocked America, while motivating one crime reporter to solve the cases and expose the truth. Violent crimes continue as the clock ticks fast in this action-packed thriller with intense suspense from beginning to end. What really happened in July of 2011, and will justice be served? "Fatal Friends,Deadly Neighbors:Ann Rule's Crime Files Volume 16" is as chilling as Along Came A Spider, as scary as Cape Fear, and as entertaining as Kiss The Girls. Highly recommended!
Approximately one half of this book (the first 50%) is devoted to two recent news stories: Susan Powell and Lori Hacking - both from Utah, who disappeared and whose husbands were eventually found responsible for each woman's death.I love reading Ann Rule true crime mysteries, but I was not aware that a major portion of this book would be about two stories which had been played out for months and months in the press. As I wasn't interested in reading something I already knew most of the details about, I read only the last part of the book. The stories in the last part are Washington-based, not recent, and are shorter than the Powell and Hacking narratives. Good, but had I known that these recent stories of Powell and Hacking were a large part of the read, I probably wouldn't have bought it.
I've read every book Ann Rule has written, including the ones she published under her pseudonym, Andy Stack. I attended a book-signing when she released a new book about five years ago and am a fan on her web site. However, I've noticed with her last few books that her writing isn't as sharp as it used to be. She often repeats the same information so it seems like her proof-readers didn't do their job to pick up redundancy. Also, her last few books contained stories that were major headline news, so there was no surprise when I read her books. But I'm sure with 48 Hours, Dateline and all the other TV shows about modern crime stories it's difficult to find material that hasn't already been covered. Still, she manages to include a few juicy details that only a good homicide detective like herself could uncover. She's still my favorite author, and I always wait anxiously for her next book.
In the chapter "Double Death for The Kind Philanthropists" Ann Rule gets some important facts wrong. I've been in both the homes mentioned; where the murders took place and the neighboring Denny Mansion. The picture labeled: "the Bramhall's mansion and grounds" is incorrect. The picture is actually of the Rolland Denny mansion. This is arguably Seattle's most historically significant home; however it is not were the murders took place. Second, while mentioning the mansion's owners she states: "None of the neighbors, however, felt that the Bramhalls had had particular difficulties with the oddly dressed Moon followers......" Referring to Unification Church members, she seems to have made up something out of whole cloth. Unificationists have always had the practice of wearing the clothes of the prevailing culture where they reside.
I have read quite a few Ann Rule books, and she is great with telling the back story as well as explaining the court room happenings so that everyday folks understand what the details discovered actually represent. These true crime books are very disturbing and it is difficult to understand the mind-workings of the criminals that commit these horrible crimes. I have to put these books down and come back to them at later times--it gets too disturbing for me. I have always been interested in the law enforcement and how in the world people "think" that have no remorse for their actions, and how they can hurt people to begin with-is thank heavens very foreign to me. I pray I never come face to face with these kinds of people!!!!
I have a whole library of Ann Rule books and have always hated coming to the end of her latest knowing it will be awhile before the next one comes out. I anticipated this book for some time and pre-orded. I have always enjoyed her "books" as apposed to the true crimes but have enjoyed those too in the past. This book, however, is boreing from page one and I think the only reason I finished it is because it was ANN RULE. My theory, is some of the stories were too new. We have been enindated with them in the news, TRU TV, Nancy Grace whatever. The book adds nothing to the story you don't already know. The shortstories seem to go into more detail about the detectives, officers, etc. than the story she is telling. In the past she has brought the victim to life and brought you into the story where these read like a news clip.
