Review
"Ina May Gaskin is an international treasure. Her new guide to breastfeeding is the best thing ever written on the subject. A must-have for all pregnant women interested in the best start for their babies." —Christiane Northrup, M.D., Author of Women' s Bodies, Women's Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause"This book is all we've come to expect of Ina May Gaskin—warm, wise, solidly based in real experiences, and sensitive to the needs and lives of women in all their complexity. It's the only breastfeeding book you'll need."—Barbara Katz Rothman and Wendy Simonds, authors of Laboring On"Simply put, midwife Ina May Gaskin is the most important person in maternity care in North America, bar none."—Marsden Wagner, M.D., M.S., former Director of Women' s and Children's Health, World Health Organization "Breastfeeding is one of life' s greatest joys. And there is no better guide to have at your side than the legendary Ina May!"—Harvey Karp, M.D., author of The Happiest Baby on the Block and creator of the DVD"Ina May Gaskin's words of wisdom are a gift to all women. Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding is the perfect informative companion to Spiritual Midwifery and Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. All of them hold a treasured place in my library and should, no doubt, be part of yours."—Ricki Lake, coauthor of Your Best Birth and cocreator of the documentary The Business of Being Born"Eons of accumulated feminine wisdom, having been muddled and dispersed by modern medical practice, have become sadly unavailable to today's woman. In this and each of her books, Ms. Gaskin, one of the world's foremost scholars of such wisdom, puts it concisely and lovingly back into our hands. Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding is the perfect gift for any pregnant woman. It is like having the best childbirth and lactation consultant right there at your bedside. And for non-pregnant women and men alike, may it be viewed as the seminal feminist text that it is, and may the re-empowerment of women with respect to childbirth be seen as central to the work of feminism, and indeed the cause of humanity, in the 21st century." —Ani DiFranco

Before I had my child I was worried I wasn't able to breastfeed her after seeing so many women struggling to make it happen and so many others bottle feeding from day one. I figured breastfeeding was not as easy as they make it seem on TV and since I was determined to do so, it was worth to prepare myself to the best of my abilities. After reading this book, (which is not only easy to read but also awakening) I felt so ready to breastfeed, I didn't even read anything else. From a personal experience I can say that breastfeeding was very hard at the beginning, but without a doubt is the single best thing I could've done for my child. I'm grateful for Ina May's wisdom.
I struggled with breastfeeding a whole bunch. Once I decided to take it into my own hands I read cover to cover at least 4 breastfeeding books. This hands down was the best one. I trust her because what she said works.
I didn't know the first thing about breastfeeding, but when I became pregnant with my son I knew I wanted to give him the best start to life I possibly could. This book was recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad I ordered it. I read this throughout my pregnancy and whenever I had a problem in the early weeks of nursing. I know this book is why I have been successful! Going on 5 months of breastfeeding now and not stopping any time soon. Thank you Ina May!!!!
I enjoyed reading the Guide to Childbirth while pregnant, so I picked this one up to answer a few questions about breastfeeding. While the book does give you confidence and explain the how-to's of many aspects of breastfeeding, it did not answer my questions on cluster feeding, overactive letdown, and such. I do recommend every breastfeeding mom to read her books, just remember that they haven't been updated in awhile. Life has gotten more open and accepting to breastfeeding since this book was last published.
I'm a family physician who does obstetric. I recommend this book to my patients. It has realistic and encouraging information that is especially helpful for first-time moms. My only complaint is that it was written in a time where doctors and hospitals over medicalized labor so it makes comments about hospital births that may not be accurate. It also doesn't mention family medicine as an option for your pregnancy. Other than that, the advice is spot on. I use examples from the book even when talking to patients who don't want to buy it read it.
I bought this book because I really enjoyed Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and wanted to prepare for breastfeeding so it seemed like a good choice. Yes, there is a chunk in the beginning that touts the benefits of breastmilk, but you'll find that in any book. It does seem less preachy than some other breastfeeding resources I've looked at, which I appreciate. There's a ton of information in the book, and I think it works as a stand alone book. I read it quickly as a bit of an overview, because there's no way that I could remember all of the little tricks and stuff prior to having a baby in my arms. But I will definitely be looking back at this book as a resource as we get started.
Gave me way more confidence. Want to reframe the conversation. Breastfeeding doesn't have to be "really hard" or "a struggle". It's a learning curve and uncomfortable at first but I think we've depowered women to the point of stripping their capabilities.
Most people just want to read instructional books, but this brings up why women should breastfeed. Honestly, there are so many videos on YouTube about latching etc. Sorry to the people looking for a quick way to figure out how to breastfeed. This will bring to light historical and societal issues regarding breastfeeding. It does touch on some troubleshooting and positions for feeding. It is so much more than that though. People need to be more informed about these things and then maybe they won’t decide to give up so easily.
