I was really interested in learning what the life of a minor league ball player was like and what the life of a major league coach was like as well. Its interesting to see how tough it is to try to make it to the big leagues and have a family at the same time. I really liked the instructional portion of the book as well. I would have liked to see more do's and don'ts as to how to properly hit but all in all it was a good book.
CAGE RAT gives the reader on the inside goings on of a major league baseball team! Clear ideas into the NY Yankee ballplayers success in hitting!
First half of book is dry
Besides having all the information one would need on how to hit a baseball, "Cage Rat" is a great tutorial on the value of setting goals, hard work, and perseverance against long odds. The book gives insight into the lifestyle of minor league and major league baseball. It is a very interesting read.
Well written. Provides a good insight into the life of a batting/hitting instructor. Wished it had a bit more depth on troubleshooting skills/drills but otherwise - a good and enjoyable read.

Kevin Long stated in Cage Rat under, 'Keep Your Distance' the distance from the pitching rubber to home plate is measured from Front Edge of rubber to front edge of Home Plate. That is Incorrect! Measuring from Front edge of rubber is correct - BUT - the measurement goes to the back tip of Home Plate...NOT the front edge as he states. He even talks about not conceding the 17". How can a pro get this basic wrong? Can I trust anything else he says? NO.
Kevin Long may be a nice guy, but the players he coaches seem to go through prolonged slumps. Changing Derek Jeter's batting stance was a catastrophe. Nick Swisher hasn't hit all season. The Yankees' DH is batting .179 and other Bronx Bombers are hitting below their skill levels. This book tells a lot about Kevin Long's love of the game and his perseverance through his minor league career, but it loses a lot of zing when one considers how poorly the Yankees are hitting under his coaching.
